Drug Abuse Counseling

Drug abuse is a serious issue and there are many different types of drug abuse counseling. Choosing the right type of drug abuse counseling for you or someone you know can be one of the most important steps in recovery.

Among available treatments is using the resources of a mental health professional. Many times drug abuse and mental health issues such as depression or anxiety disorders coexist. When persons with these types of disorders go undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to drug abuse for the purpose of self medication. If someone is showing signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety or some other type of mental health issue, you should first seek the advice of a mental health professional. Treating the underlying disorder will often aid in the recovery of a drug abuse issue. There are medications that can be prescribed by a psychiatrist and also a psychologist can provide therapy for both the underlying issue and drug abuse counseling. This type of counseling is done on an 'outpatient' basis with the patient attending appointments for individual therapy and sometimes group therapy.

Drug abuse counseling may also be conducted through an 'inpatient' program. These types of programs require the person with the drug abuse issue to reside at the facility. This gives the patient the opportunity to remove themselves from the environment that may be contributing to their drug abuse problem. Also this type of drug abuse counseling is a more intense type of counseling. Drug abuse counseling on an 'inpatient' basis will include individual psychotherapy, group sessions and sometimes prescribed medications.

Hypnosis is also being used in drug abuse counseling. Hypnosis is designed to put a person in the state of being in touch with issues they may have buried in the recesses of their minds to lessen the pain of a particular incident. Hypnosis can also be used for drug abuse issues by giving subconscious suggestions to the patient related to their drug abuse.

Today there are even on-line counselors available for drug abuse issues. If you 'Google' the term 'On-line Counselors' you will find services available there. Of course when using any on-line services, be sure to check credentials and ask if there are previous clients that you may speak with to ask about their experience with a particular company or program.

Drug abuse counseling comes in many forms such as those mentioned above along with self help tapes and books, peer meetings such as Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. Recovering from a drug abuse issue can be a difficult task and drug abuse counseling is a personal decision and an important one. Look into all available options, check with your insurance company for what they will cover (if you have this available) and make an informed and well thought out decision.
